The way we make films also shapes the systems we build. Joel develops and uses these systems in his own practice, bringing creative work, knowledge and the business around it into context.
One practice, connected domains
The whole practice has a structure.
Think of the Creative Operating System as the whole working environment. Filmmaking is one domain within it. The company is where these ideas are used, tested and refined.
The applications are in development and in personal use within LightWave. This is a view into the practice and the direction of the work.

The filmmaking domain brings the story, imagery and production into a shared context. It grows from Joel’s work as a cinematographer and technical lead, and the practical questions that arise while making a film.
Room for other disciplines.
The same foundation can support other creative domains, including photography through photoOS. Each develops around the needs of the practice.
To create is to make something that was missing before.
A system should make more room for that work. It should support judgment, preserve authorship and help people understand the choices in front of them.
